Even though I have gotten used to the crazy changes in search marketing year after year I have to admit that this last 12 months has been just staggering.
In the past no matter what the changes as long as you stayed focused on web search you were fine. Optimized pages, constant content and backlinks.
It seems to me though that the shift to social is truly taking over. Just this year in my family we have put the laptops away to be replaced by smart phones and ipads. I stll use my desktops at work with their huge monitors but even I can see the mobiles taking over.
Add to that the shift to facebook, twitter and youtube + local search results and I am slowly rebuilding all my websites to work on mobile devices and while I have not thrown out basic search engine marketing I now build in social media marketing into every marketing plan.
I don't have any idea how google's +1 will shake out, but it is starting to feel like they are going to make it work no matter what it takes. I also wonder how the new "talking" phones are going to affect search - if you just ask your phone for a recommendation = how do our marketing efforts affect those results?
The only think that I am sure of is that 2012 is going to be another interesting year.
